Try something new challenge!

Fri Jun 29, 2012, 8:03 PM

Maybe you've always wanted to try a craft but never found an excuse to? Or you want to try something new? Well this is your chance, we're inviting you all to join us for a fun contest involving all the artisan crafts!

For this contest we want you to pick an artisan craft you've never tried before and do something with it. You can choose whatever craft you prefer and do anything with it, the only condition is that it needs to be completely new for you. If you need help picking one you can find examples and tutorials in the Artisan Crafts ABC.

Rules
  • You must make an object using any artisan craft you desire, photograph it and upload it to the appropriate Artisan Crafts gallery. Also you need to submit it to the Artisan Crafts Contest folder.
  • The work must be your own, using tutorials or resources is allowed and encouraged but you must credit them.
  • The craft must be new to you, and preferably far from what you already do (eg: crocheting and knitting are too close). Anyone caught cheating by trying to pass something as a new work will be disqualified from the contest.

Deadline

The contest will run from now until July 29th. All entries must be made and submitted between June 29th and July 29th.

Prizes
  • First place: 1 year subscription and 2000 points
  • Second place: 6 month subscription and 1000 points
  • Third place: 1000 points

Plus features and whatever else we can get along the way :) if you would like to donate a prize contact us.

Judging

Judging will be based mainly on the effort and the craft chosen. Since we know everyone will be a beginner we won't place too much weight on perfection, but we still want you to do your best work! The judges will be the Artisan Crafts CV, we will probably ask some more people to help :)

Frist, upload your entry to your gallery :) Next, go to #projecteducate and join the group, you have to be a member in order to submit. Then go to this folder: [link] and click the button that says "Submit to this Folder" on the top right corner. Wait for someone to accept it and you're done! :)

Let me know if any part of the submission process is still confusing to you.

and how many submissions can we have?

One entry, please :)

Well since we're asking people to make things exclusively for the contest, I think it would be sort of like cheating if you submit things that you made for another purpose, but I'll leave that decision to you :)

I'm sorry if I sound rude, but I have to rant about this:

It doesn't state that the thing you make has to be exclusively for the contest. It only says it has to be made between June 29th to July 29th, and my candle (the one I was going to submit) was made the week of July 12th. So, according to the rules, my candle is allowed ^.^
I don't know. Just wanted to point that out :D

I'm thinking of trying to construct a headdress for a cosplay which I've never done before, but it may be too close to the sewing/costume making that I already do. And I'm pretty sure I won't make the deadline! And I already do too many crafts as it is! I think the ones I don't do are cause I don't have the money to do them or the means (like pottery - don't have a kiln), lol!

Well if the headdress doesn't include sewing or a lot of sewing, I think it would be perfect :D it's a bit difficult to decide what's close to another craft, that's why we said "preferably". I know you're super busy but it would be awesome if you could make the deadline!

Yeah, it wouldn't include a lot of sewing. Mostly glue and frustration I'm thinking! But I don't have the materials and am still working out the technical details so I won't make the deadline :(

I would like to ask that if until now I made some BJDs with 5 "ball joints" (head, arms, legs) and now I'm working on a totally new BJD with 13 "ball joints" and I tried out a new material also.. can I enter to the contest?

I'm afraid that that's pretty close, you may enter for the fun but it lowers your chances of winning.

Quick question, I'm primarily a sculptor, so would a posable art doll be too close? I've never made one before but I've had some ideas I'd love to try out and this gives me quite a good excuse :aww:

Oh, I thought of another possibility! I've been dying to try bleaching designs into a black t-shirt (I have no idea what the process is actually called ^^;) However it's still dealing with fabrics (I sew and such), is this acceptable?

So I finished my craft but I just saw that you're probably only allowed to make one entry.
the thing is I kinda made 3 different keychains and put pictures of all 3 into one big photo.
Does that still count as one entry? I was just caught up in it because it was so much fun >//o//<

Hmm... I tried out Polymer clay last week, and made something, but apart from that I have no experience in it whatsoever, so would that still count as a 'new' craft? It feels very new to me!

Oh oh and one more question, how many entries per person are allowed (given the fact that they are all new crafts for the artist)?
I suppose 1, but nowhere says that (you could edit the journal so everyone could know this) :D
